YouTube's analytics additions could reveal user engagement better


Summary: Now not only will you know how many people clicked on your YouTube video, but you can find out how engaged they were based on time watched as well.
YouTube Analytics has gotten several boosts in the last few months, which are being introduced to the public today.
While at first glance it looks like a lot of extra tools in the sidebars, these metrics really have the possibility to shape the way YouTube videos are produced and promoted in the future.
At the core of the upgrades is the new "Time Watched" metric, which identifies the estimated number of minutes watched over a given amount of time.
While clicks are important, they don't necessarily reflect how deeply the user was engaged. Of course, it is possible that a video can run through its entirety in the background without the user having actually seen it.
Nothing is going to perfectly identify user engagement, but YouTube looks like it could be on a better path to doing so.

Another improvement is being able to compare metrics in which users can simply compare trends and patterns across two different metrics. This could offer video producers and such with another opportunity to identify the value of a video by comparing time spent watching with estimated earnings, as seen in the screenshot below.
Not only is it helpful about the product currently listed, but it could offer insights and influence how producers work on the next project.

Alleged iPad mini models, pricing leaks online


A leaked inventory system screenshot has purportedly leaked the pricing scheme behind Apple's upcoming 7-inch tablet, dubbed the iPad mini.
The base price of the iPad mini (8GB storage, Wi-Fi only) is set at €249, or $320 at the current exchange rate, according to German site MobileGeeks (via GigaOm). The leaked screenshot is reportedly from a widely used inventory system in Europe and Asia used by mobile firms and cellular networks.

(It's worth noting that Apple tends to synchronize prices across continents, even if they don't necessarily translate at the currency-exchange level. It goes almost without saying: until Apple announces the device, pegged for October 23 according to numerous reports, the pricing at this point may not be accurate.)
The iPad mini, which may not be its final name, has been on the tip of the technology world's tongue for months as Amazon, Google, and Samsung continue to dominate this almost-niche section of the 7-inch tablet market. Apple has yet to capitalize on this lucrative market, based on sales figures from the companies' quarterly earnings reports.
There are a few things to consider with the iPad mini. To wit:
Cellular conundrum: The Guardian (via CNET) said that the iPad mini will not include cellular connectivity, citing unnamed industry sources. The leaked pricing figures suggest that Apple has a cellular version of the iPad mini ready to roll out. But cellular devices cost more than wireless networking devices. It boils down to the profit margin figures.
Should the device come without 3G or 4G LTE connectivity, Apple also avoids the headache over selling the expected device without facing the hassle of building different LTE hardware models for the requirements of each cellular network.
That said, the leaked pricing suggests that at least some cellular connectivity may be on the way. Apple could avoid the 4G LTE headaches by simply include 3G connectivity. How this compares to the production costs of including 4G LTE connectivity remains unclear.
PricingThe pricing leaves little to be desired between the 7-inch iPad mini and the 4-inch iPod touch -- two devices that are for all intents and purposes the same device -- (if the iPad mini does include cellular connectivity, include the iPhone into the iPod touch mix) -- because the prices do not suggest a stable middle ground between the smaller and larger tablet-esque devices.
The iPad 3 pricing starts at $499 while the iPad 2 starts at $399. ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes suggests the ideal price would arrive in at below $299 to remain competitive with its larger 9.7-inch counterparts. The new 4-inch iPod touch starts at $299 which isn't a far cry away from the estimated $320 price tag of the base version of the iPad mini. 
Apple's profit margins are typically high. Recent Apple v. Samsung court filings show the iPhone alone has a profit margin of between one-quarter and one-third. It's likely Apple will balance two crucial elements -- competing 7-inch tablets, while negating a price disparity between the 4-inch iPod touch and the 9.7-inch iPad -- but exactly how it'll manage this one is anybody's guess.
Either Apple will 'do an Amazon' and sell the iPad mini at a loss or at a fraction of the profit margin of the iPod touch and iPad, or it will bump the price of the iPad mini and retain a modest profit margin while keeping the pricing balance right across its range of iOS-powered devices.
Enterprise value: A smaller iPad will shake up the 7-inch tablet market for sure. Amazon's Android-powered Kindle is a thin-client designed to consume the company's cloud services. Samsung is a hardware company through and through and leaves Google, the Android mobile operating system maker, to the cloud services with Google Play. Apple is in almost the same position: it's part-hardware maker, part-cloud provider. For the business market, however, the cloud and apps don't matter. Businesses have their own clouds, their own sideloaded apps, and their own infrastructure. 
If Apple nails the $399 price point or less, it will be a short-term fix for Apple, ZDNet's Larry Dignan explains. All eyes will be on Microsoft's Surface -- the true 'business' tablet -- which has yet to make a pricing appearance. If Apple is able to nail down the price to a sub-$399 figure and take on Microsoft at its relatively new game, it can blow Amazon's Kindle at $199 out of the water.

A Robot Plumbs the Depths of the Gowanus Canal By VIVIAN YEE

No one knows what lurks in the toxic depths of the Gowanus Canal, but with the advent of a fleet of remotely controlled rovers that will roam its dank waters for the next few years, the canal’s secrets may finally be stripped bare.
That is the hope, at any rate, of a team of researchers and students at thePolytechnic Institute of New York University who were wrestling a plastic-and-metal contraption into the greenish water at the end of Second Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn, on a recent drizzly morning.
The air was appropriately, and overwhelmingly, sulfurous; the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and the odd joke at the canal’s expense. As students wrangled their robot into a yellow harness, two professors, Maurizio Porfiri and Oded Nov, hovered around them anxiously, shouting out small adjustments.
With barely a sound, Brooklyn Atlantis I took off for the middle of the canal, guided by a black remote-control device that looked more suited to a car-racing video game than to this ungainly robot.
The Atlantis I, a solar-powered aquatic rover, is the first of several that the researchers hope will be chugging through the canal’s inky waters within months.
The robots, which cost about $3,000 apiece, will each be equipped with underwater and above-water cameras and a multitude of sensors to measure the water’s pH, oxygen, temperature, air quality and salinity, uploading new data and photos to a Web site every few seconds.
“We’ll be able to track how fish breathe or don’t breathe,” said Dr. Porfiri, nodding toward the noxious water with a giggle. Dr. Porfiri is a robotics and mechanics expert who has conducted experiments with robotic fish, while Dr. Nov studies the interactions between humans and machines.
The Web site will be available to everyone, and the researchers hope enough people will start contributing their own analyses of what the robot finds that the data will yield insights they might not have found on their own — correlations between the oxygen levels and the types of life-forms at different times of year, for instance.
Anyone can tag photos and track patterns in the environmental conditions, and those who contribute frequently and accurately can graduate to greater responsibilities.
Particularly avid users will eventually be able to control their own robot. (And, fair warning to the conspiracy theorists: those who eagerly tag every log and leaf “Loch Ness monster” will be weeded out.)
With its citizen-science approach, the Atlantis project is trying to replicate the success of other crowdsourced research efforts. Amateur astronomers and bird-watchers have long helped scientists identify new planets and stars and track bird species, for example.
The researchers expect Gowanus residents and local environmental activists to use the site to track the progress of the canal’s cleanup.
Dr. Porfiri recently attended a local community board meeting, at which residents asked to add air-quality and salinity sensors to the robot.
It was in part because of residents’ efforts to bring attention to the site that in 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency designated the 1.8-mile canal a Superfund site in need of a comprehensive cleanup.
“The human eye doesn’t have to have a Ph.D. in astronomy,” Dr. Nov said. “There’s no other way to do this besides spending a lot of money on monitoring.”
Eventually, Dr. Nov said, similar robots could be used to monitor conditions in other watery environments, like the Gulf of Mexico after an oil spill. The Gowanus project has attracted the attention of the E.P.A., which believes that data from the rovers could be used to help in the canal’s cleanup.
Dr. Porfiri had been planning a more theoretical project, but when he and his wife moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn, more than a year ago and heard about the canal’s Superfund status, he decided the project could have a more practical application. A team of five graduate and undergraduate students built the robot, whose cost was financed by the National Science Foundation, along with its accompanying Web site, and tested the robot’s swimming skills in a pool before dropping it into the canal.
“The crane didn’t break; it’s already a major accomplishment,” Dr. Porfiri said, pacing as he watched students lower the Atlantis. He laughed and added, “He’ll have to wear gloves to remove the sling!”
But once it was in the water, nobody seemed in a hurry to take it out again. It spun around, executed a three-point turn, and chugged toward a graffiti-covered bridge nearby. At that moment, it was the only sign of life in the canal.

Quantum research to yield 'super computers': Nobel winner

David Wineland, who won on October 9 the Nobel Prize for work in quantum physics with Serge Haroche of France, said our limited computers will "eventually" give way to super-fast, revolutionary ones. The pair, both 68, were honoured for pioneering optical experiments in "measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems," the Nobel Physics jury said in its citation. "Most science progresses very slowly," Wineland told AFP. "On the computing side, we are able to think about applying these quantum systems to solve other problems that we try to do on computer now but our computers are limited. "It has not happened yet and I am not even sure it will happen in the next decade, but I think it will eventually happen using quantum principles to make a quantum computer that will actually have applications." In a pre-dawn phone interview recorded and posted on the Nobel committee website earlier, Wineland cautioned that such a super-computer was still a "long, long way" off. Today's computers use a binary code, in which data is stored in a bit that could be either zero or one. But in superposition, a quantum bit, known as a qubit, could be either zero or one, or both zero and one at the same time. This potentially offers a massive increase in data storage, greatly helping number-crunching tasks such as running climate-change models and breaking encrypted codes. But many technical hurdles remain to be overcome. "If we have the quantum computer, it will allow us to efficiently simulate other quantum systems that are of interest," Wineland told AFP, noting that scientists today "are simply limited by the computing power of our conventional computers." The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the basis for a new standard of time, with a more than hundred-fold greater precision than present-day caesium atomic clocks, it said. Specialists in optics, the two scientists worked independently of each other to trap particles, enabling the quantum state to be examined and manipulated at ultra-low temperatures. "In some sense, the systems we worked on are in many ways complementary," said Wineland, project leader at the Ion Storage Group of US government's National Institute of Standards and Technology since 1979. "We were never direct competitors but the nice thing is that we could look at a similar problem but in a different context. The experiments were different but they could be related at a fundamental level." He said that news of his win was "overwhelming." "This could have gone to so many people beside me," Wineland added, noting that a "huge" number of scientists are involved in his field. Wineland said he was awakened in the middle of the night at his home in Boulder, Colorado with a call from the committee in Stockholm. "Actually, my wife woke me up," he said. Wei, head of the Institute of Three Gorges Paleoanthropology at a Chongqing museum, said excavated panda fossils "showed that pandas were once slashed to death by man". The Chongqing Morning Post quoted him as saying: "In primitive times, people wouldn't kill animals that were useless to them," and therefore the pandas must have been used as food. A "kiss" for the shuttle Endeavour

In a town known for the paparazzi, space shuttle Endeavour has likely set a new bar for being the subject of photographs. All weekend, people were snapping photos of the spacecraft as it rolled down the streets of Los Angeles. Scores of people shared their photos with The Times. You can look at them here. Some people had some fun with the shuttle, using the tricks of photography to make them look closer to the shuttle than they actually were. Tamara Grey "kissed" the shuttle; Ted Tablan photographed a worker "lifting" it. After a dramatic three-day parade through city streets marked by repeated lengthy delays, Endeavour was greeted by thousands of cheering spectators as it pulled up to its new home at the California Science Center. The shuttle’s arrival, shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday, was more than 16 hours behind schedule, but the 85-ton orbiter survived its 12-mile journey through the city streets, from Los Angeles International Airport to the museum at Exposition Park, without a scratch. “Mission 26 -- mission accomplished,” Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told reporters and spectators, standing at Exposition Park with the shuttle behind him as a backdrop.
